Shadow is a ranged support-damage spec. Vampiric Touch returns mana to the nearby party, not every caster in the raid. Its value depends on party placement and encounter needs; it is not a guarantee of a raid spot.
How Shadow Priest plays
Maintain Vampiric Touch and Shadow Word: Pain, use Mind Blast and channel Mind Flay while managing mana and threat. Avoid wasteful damage-over-time clipping. Utility and party mana support are part of the assignment, even when personal damage is lower than dedicated damage leaders.
Leveling a Shadow Priest
Shadow is a practical solo Priest leveling direction. Use shields, damage-over-time effects and appropriate recovery to control ordinary pulls. Keep healing equipment if you plan to heal suitable leveling dungeons; a damage talent build and a dedicated endgame healing build have different limits.
Shadow Priest in raids & PvP
Raids can value a Shadow Priest in a party needing Vampiric Touch mana support, with debuffs and sustained damage alongside it. Arena pressure depends on partners, cast access and survival rather than a promise of being hard to kill. Compare Holy for varied PvE healing and Discipline for arena healing.
