Methodology and sources

Reviewed 2026-09-30. These guides compare TBC playstyles and practical character decisions. They are editorial recommendations based on published mechanics, not original simulations, personal raid testing, or a live leaderboard. Anniversary phase rules and specific item restrictions can change availability.

Quiz version 2.0

The first question restricts recommendations to tank, healer, ranged damage or melee damage. Feral is eligible for tank and melee. The remaining nine questions award preference points. For each spec, earned points are divided by the maximum available points across those questions, preventing a spec with more listed weights from winning merely through coverage.

Equal scores are ordered by your class-fantasy answer, then your PvE/PvP/solo focus, then the spec key alphabetically. The main result and two alternatives are drawn from the same eligible role. A close or tied match is a reason to compare the written trade-offs. The score is not a probability, measured damage value or prediction of success. Newcomer and veteran choices change wording only; difficulty is expressed through your complexity answer.

How to read ratings

PvE letters summarize typical raid usefulness and damage or healing roles. S indicates a particularly strong conventional role; A a strong option; B a situational or support option; C a narrower comparison. Tank ratings are not damage rankings. Party composition, debuff duplication, encounter and phase can change the value. PvP labels are separate and depend on talents, bracket and partners. Complexity describes the learning workload, not an objective skill requirement.

Mechanics and scope references

Class references and decision notes

Druid

Feral covers bear tanking and cat melee, Balance ranged caster support, and Restoration healing. Feral flexibility needs separate equipment and practice; it does not turn a damage set into a ready tank set. Choose one first responsibility and expand only once you understand it.

Hunter

Beast Mastery is the first comparison for pet-supported leveling and raid damage. Survival answers a raid-support question through Expose Weakness. Marksmanship answers a different PvP control question; do not pick it because its name sounds like the biggest raid damage dealer.

Mage

Use Frost as a reference for leveling and arena control, Fire for sustained casting, and Arcane for planned mana-intensive raid windows. A beginner can enjoy any of them, but a supported Arcane raid build is a different experience from solo questing with a small mana pool.

Paladin

Protection suits prepared multi-target tanking, Holy focused healing, and Retribution melee support with optional timing-intensive seal twisting. All share Paladin utility, but that does not make their solo speed or raid assignment interchangeable. Try the job you expect to do most often.

Priest

Holy is the broad PvE healing comparison, Discipline the arena healing and prevention comparison, and Shadow a ranged support-damage role. Changing between them can change your assignment, equipment and party placement. Decide whether you want to heal before comparing damage labels.

Rogue

Combat is the usual raid-damage comparison, Subtlety the control-oriented arena comparison, and Assassination a positional dagger choice. Think about rear access, weapon availability and whether the content rewards sustained attacks or planned control windows. One PvP opener does not predict raid performance.

Shaman

Elemental supports caster parties, Enhancement physical parties, and Restoration healing assignments. All three have Bloodlust or Heroism, which is party-scoped in TBC. Pick the combat role first; wanting to help a group does not force you to become its healer.

Warlock

Affliction provides sustained damage-over-time play and a support role; deep Demonology emphasizes pet management; Destruction is the usual strong raid-damage comparison. Arena SL/SL crosses talent trees. Read the exact build rather than expecting the name of one tree to describe every competitive setup.

Warrior

Protection is a dedicated tank toolkit, Arms physical support and arena pressure, and Fury sustained dual-wield damage. Weapon quality and group support affect the leveling experience. If you want to tank, compare the workload and emergency tools with Paladin and Feral instead of selecting a tank by a damage ranking.

Corrections and limits

Profession choices are examples for a stated role, not promises of profit or compulsory purchases. We distinguish TBC mechanics from later expansions and flag phase-dependent items.
