Beast Mastery, Marksmanship or Survival in TBC?

Hunter names can suggest a misleading hierarchy. In TBC, the useful distinction is pet-supported damage, raid utility, or a control-oriented PvP plan.

For a first leveling character

Start the comparison with Beast Mastery. A durable pet makes ordinary questing approachable and teaches a toolkit you will keep using. Practice pet recall, feeding and training, not only attacks. Turn Growl off when a player tanks a dungeon. A pet that pulls an extra group or dies to an avoidable mechanic can erase the comfort advantage.

For raid damage

Beast Mastery is a strong conventional damage direction. Kill Command follows your own critical strikes in TBC, and shot timing and pet survival remain important. This does not mean every raid encounter or equipment level produces the same result. Exotic pets are a later-expansion feature and should not influence this choice.

For a physical-heavy raid party and roster

Survival contributes Expose Weakness, whose value depends on agility and physical attackers. Ask whether the raid already has that contribution. A second identical debuff does not provide the same new benefit as filling a missing support role. This is a roster decision as well as a personal damage comparison.

For arena control and pressure

Marksmanship can support control and mana-pressure plans, with Aimed Shot healing reduction and Silencing Shot. It is not the default TBC raid-meter winner, and Chimera Shot is unavailable. Compare actual talents, partner composition and bracket expectations before turning a general PvP label into a build plan.

Make the change for a reason

Changing specs makes sense when your content or assignment changes. It makes less sense because a name sounds stronger. Keep the correct weapon and pet plan, compare the role-specific guide, and decide whether your next investment improves the activity you really play. Arena and raid recommendations answer different questions.
