TBC professions on a budget: what to buy first

A profession recommendation is useful only if you can name its benefit, afford it and use it before replacing it. Start with a spending plan, not a universal pair of crafts.

During leveling

Gathering can fund skills, travel and ordinary equipment. Choose a profession that fits your route: mining near ore, herbalism along suitable paths, or skinning during beast quests. Time and bag space are costs too. Selling materials and buying finished consumables may be better than crafting at an unfavorable margin.

Name the endgame benefit

Write down the specific crafted weapon, cloth set, goggles, ring enchant or party-drums assignment you expect to use. Check its recipe, specialization, phase and material requirements. If the plan only says “two crafting professions give equal bonuses,” it is not yet a TBC equipment plan. Benefits are different and sometimes situational.

Check expansion and spell school

TBC Mining has no Toughness stamina bonus; Alchemy has no Mixology; Leatherworking has no Fur Lining; Tailoring has no cloak embroidery. Spellfire supports fire and arcane rather than nature or shadow. Jewelcrafting is not the later three-Dragon’s-Eye bonus system. Removing a false bonus can change the entire value calculation.

Compare total cost with alternatives

Add leveling, recipes, specialization, final materials, gems and enchants. Compare the finished item with reputation, dungeon and available raid alternatives. Materials you gather yourself still have a sale value. A craft that is affordable only by spending every coin may leave you unable to buy the consumables needed to use it effectively.

Commit when the purpose is clear

A casual main can keep gathering. A planned raid character can switch once the role and roster expectations are known. Auction profit depends on your server, recipe access and competition, so start with small completed sales rather than a guaranteed gold-per-hour promise. Review the plan again when a phase changes available items.
